Plato considered mankind to be biological: humanity has certain genetics that separate them from animals. When Plato asserted that man was a featherless biped, Diogenes stood, brandished the bald chicken and shouted, “Behold-a man!” Plato, perhaps missing the point of Diogenes’ criticism, then continued to amend his definition to “featherless biped with flat, broad nails.” In a humorous scene, Diogenes the Cynic, hearing Plato’s definition, plucked a chicken in his home and brought it to one of Plato’s lectures. He settled on a scientific definition, naming man a “ featherless biped,” two characteristics that distinguished humanity from other animals. Plato famously attempted to define a man, using references from his mentor Socrates. The ancient Greeks debated this topic feverishly. But philosophy goes deeper than that it does not also ask the question of how we should act, but rather, how do we figure out who we are? What defines a human? Everything on this blog so far has been concerned with how a person should act, exploring some schools of thought concerning the most “moral” way a person should approach a situation. After that, the initial clue has served its purpose, and I can go on to convey the new information “humans are currently mortal”, or whatever else I want to say about us featherless bipeds.Ī dictionary is best thought of, not as a book of Aristotelian class definitions, but a book of hints for matching verbal labels to similarity clusters, or matching labels to properties that are useful in distinguishing similarity clusters.Philosophy has many angles. The initial clue only has to lead the user to the similarity cluster-the group of things that have many characteristics in common. If the first featherless biped you see is a plucked chicken, then you may end up thinking that the verbal label “human” denotes a plucked chicken so I can modify my treasure map to point to “featherless bipeds with broad nails”, and if I am wise, go on to say, “See Diogenes over there? That’s a human, and I’m a human, and you’re a human and that chimpanzee is not a human, though fairly close.” (If Aristotelian logic were a good model of human psychology, the Platonists would have looked at the plucked chicken and said, “Yes, that’s a human what’s your point?”) Thus the category “human” grows richer, and adds more and more characteristics and when Diogenes finally presents his plucked chicken, we are not fooled: This plucked chicken is obviously not similar to the other “featherless bipeds”. The particular featherless bipeds that you see seem to also use language, build complex tools, speak combinatorial language with syntax, bleed red blood if poked, die when they drink hemlock. Once the definition “featherless biped” has been bound to some particular featherless bipeds, you can look over the group, and begin harvesting some of the other characteristics-beyond mere featherfree twolegginess-that the “featherless bipeds” seem to share in common. With the right set of necessary-and-sufficient gene sequences you could single out all humans, and only humans-at least for now-but it would still be far from all that humans have in common.īut so long as you don’t happen to be near a plucked chicken, saying “Look for featherless bipeds” may serve to pick out a few dozen of the particular things that are humans, as opposed to houses, vases, sandwiches, cats, colors, or mathematical theorems. We make complex tools to make complex tools, we use syntactical combinatorial language, we harness critical fission reactions as a source of energy: these things may serve out to single out only humans, but not all humans-many of us have never built a fission reactor. We have red blood, five fingers on each of two hands, bony skulls, 23 pairs of chromosomes-but the same might be said of other animal species. No dictionary, no encyclopedia, has ever listed all the things that humans have in common. Diogenes of Sinope, also called Diogenes the Cynic, is said to have promptly exhibited a plucked chicken and declared “Here is Plato’s man.” The Platonists promptly changed their definition to “a featherless biped with broad nails”. Once upon a time, the philosophers of Plato’s Academy claimed that the best definition of human was a “featherless biped”.

Some 510 batteries are designed to fly even more under the radar by mimicking a standard car key fob design, look like a normal stylus pen or have as small of a footprint as possible. Portable & Discreet – the compact nature of 510 battery designs make them the perfect vapes for traveling and on-the-go lifestyles since they are small and light enough to easily slip into a pocket without attracting unwanted attention. 510 vape pens are also easy to clean and require little to no maintenance. This straightforward process is perfect for beginners and appreciated by connoisseurs alike. There are several advantages that make these an ideal choice for oil and wax vapers.Ĭompatibility – 510 batteries use an industry standard type of connection that makes them the most compatible option for the widest range of cartridges, atomizers, dab tips and other accessories.Įase of Use – simply screw your oil cartridge, wax atomizer or dip tip onto your charged battery and it is ready to go. Many 510 batteries also incorporate LED lights to signal when a battery is low on charge. It is very important that the power specifications of the battery match those of the charger for both battery life and safety by avoiding issues such as overheating. Some 510 thread vape batteries are designed for one-time use and are not rechargeable, but many vape pen batteries are rechargeable through USB-style charging or a dedicated power supply and cable. Button activated pens often allow more precise control of the vaping process than auto-draw designs. press 5 times quickly in a row) or an additional switch or lock on the battery. Often these types of 510 batteries will offer a safety feature to keep the power turned on or off, such as a sequence of button presses (e.g. Button Activated vape pen batteries function by, you guessed it, pressing a button as you inhale. This is the simplest form of vape pen and the easiest to use, with no need to worry about the vaporizer accidentally turning on in your pocket or bag – just breathe in and it works. A buttonless 510 battery essentially has an auto-on and auto-off functionality that is only activated when a user inhales through the mouthpiece. There are several different ways that a battery can be activated, although the two most common styles are “Auto-Draw/Buttonless” and “Button Activated”. oil or wax) can instantaneously be transformed from a liquid or solid into a vapor for a user to safely inhale. For the best vaping experience, it is important that you choose a 510 battery that is a good pairing for your style of usage and the type(s) of concentrates that you will be using with the vape pen.ĥ10 thread vape pen batteries all utilize the same basic function to create vapor: when activated, the battery transmits electrical power to a heating element that quickly raises the temperature to a point where the concentrate (e.g. Although often referred to as the “battery”, in reality most 510 batteries are actually fully functioning vape pens that simply require users to screw on a cartridge, atomizer or other accessory in order to begin vaping their preferred form of concentrate.ĥ10 thread vape batteries come in a variety of designs, power specs and features, from basic pen-shaped buttonless batteries to high-tech models with variable power levels and digital displays to offer a range of vaping solutions that are tailored to the different needs of a variety of users and experience levels. This thread design allows for a tight and long-lasting connection. “510” refers to the design of the female screw threads built into one end of the battery – 10 x 5mm threads – which is the most compatible type of connection for vape pens around the world. A 510 thread battery is the main body of a vape pen that comes with a standardized style of screw-on connection that is compatible with the widest range of oil cartridges, wax atomizers, dab tips and accessories. For instance, a study in healthy subjects demonstrated that skill acquisition of the sequential motor learning occurs at the same rate in both VE and conventional screen environments, while the transfer of motor skills was not observed from VE to the screen environment. Furthermore, several reports focused on interactions of skill acquisition of motor learning in VEs and REs. However, another study demonstrated that training in VE cannot promote better performance than the same task in RE. For example, a previous study has suggested that post-training performance in virtual and real training is equivalent and both of which significantly exceeds without training. However, opinions vary concerning how learning in virtual and real environments (REs) could affect motor skill acquisition. Furthermore, several studies have reported that VEs also promote motor learning. Other studies have suggested that VE training could improve balance, gait, motor function, and quality of life in patients with Parkinson’s disease and motor function in children with cerebral palsy. For instance, previous studies have demonstrated that VEs could contribute to effective interventions for the improvement of upper limb function, balance, and gait after stroke. Due to their applicability and expandability, VEs have been introduced as new effective approaches in rehabilitation. To illustrate, previous studies have reported that both the agency and ownership of the virtual hand are induced concurrently if the visual presentation of the virtual hand movement matches the subject’s active hand movement. VEs can modulate perception and cognition by providing coherent sensory feedback that corresponds to the actions taken place within the VE and grants users the psychological sense of being present there. Virtual environments (VEs) have attracted attention with the recent advances in technology. This implicit sequential task has been widely used to quantitatively evaluate the acquisition of a new skill. Previous studies focusing on implicit motor learning have reported the activations of the right ventral striatum, right thalamus, and subcortical regions during a serial reaction time task (SRTT). By contrast, implicit learning is primarily related to the activity of the contralateral sensory and primary motor cortices. Explicit motor learning is associated with the activity of the dorsal premotor cortex, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and supplementary motor area. The memory system employed differs between implicit and explicit learning. The two components of the learning process include implicit motor learning that improves the performance of a sequence without the knowledge of the sequence and explicit motor learning that involves conscious recollection with the knowledge of the sequence. The acquisition of new skills through motor practice is essential to interact with the environment and adjust the integration of multiple elements of movement. Motor learning refers to an improvement in the performance of sensory-guided motor behavior via practice. These findings suggested that the sequential reaching task in VEs can be facilitated by a motor learning task comprising the same sequential finger task in REs, even when a different task is applied. The results showed that the sequential reaching task in VEs was facilitated after the sequential finger task in REs. Subsequently, the response time in RE task and VE task was compared between the two groups respectively. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups in the task order the first group was RE task followed by VE task and the second group was VE task followed by RE task. Twenty-seven healthy volunteers performed two types of sequential motor learning tasks a visually cued button-press task in RE (RE task) and a virtual reaching task in VE (VE task). Here, we investigated the transfer of sequential motor learning between VEs and REs conditions. Thus, detailed effects of the transfer of motor skills between VEs and REs remain controversial. Although studies have previously examined the transfer of motor learning in VEs and REs through the same tasks, only a small number of studies have focused on studying the transfer of motor learning in VEs and REs by using different tasks. Skill acquisition of motor learning between virtual environments (VEs) and real environments (REs) may be related. When most people think about tribes they are talking about federally recognized tribes. Tribes in the US fall into two categories. The pot of resources, whatever resources you’re discussing, is only so large and it must be shared by all tribal members. More members mean a smaller piece of the pie for existing members. Simply put, most federally recognized tribes aren’t interested in more tribal members. We are working on improving this ability, but the science simply isn’t there yet and the number of Native people who have tested remains small. Sometimes you will be able to infer a tribe based on your matches and their documented history, but the definition of tribes, their names and locations have changed over time. Generally, DNA testing does not provide us with the information needed to determine a tribe, although it can clearly tell, using y-line or mitochondrial DNA testing, whether your direct paternal or maternal line was or was not Native. Myth 3 – DNA Testing Will Reveal my Tribe If you don’t know who in your family was a tribal member it’s unlikely that you would be able to meet the blood quantum requirement. Some tribes require as much as 25% Native heritage, and most require at least 1/16 th Native heritage, which is one great-great grandparent. Most tribes require a specific percentage of Native “blood,” called blood quantum, in addition to being able to document which tribal member you descend from. Each tribe is a sovereign nation, and they get to determine their criteria for membership. Many people think that if they can only figure out which tribe their ancestor descends from, they can join. There are sometimes scholarships and grants available, mostly by the individual tribes themselves, for their official members. There is no free college for Native Americans. I’m not going to repeat something I’ve already covered elsewhere. Second, I’d like to talk a little about conventional research and third, I’d like to discuss what DNA can, and can’t, do for you.Īs you read this blog, please click on the links. I’d like to talk about three topics in proving Native Ancestry. Regardless of why, they are all searching for information lost to them. Some want to honor their persecuted and hidden ancestors, undoing some of the wickedness of the past, and some simply seek the truth. Some want to find their tribe and join to reclaim their lost heritage. The reasons vary, and not everyone wants to prove their heritage in order to qualify for some type of assistance. I want to prove this so that I can receive help with money for college.” “My family has always said that we were part Native American. Every day, I receive e-mails very similar to this one. Twenty years after my own graduation, I have come gradually to understand that the liberal arts cliché about teaching you how to think is actually shorthand for a much deeper, more serious idea: learning how to think really means learning how to exercise some control over how and what you think. It is extremely difficult to stay alert and attentive, instead of getting hypnotized by the constant monologue inside your own head (may be happening right now). On the double-edged sword of the intellect, which Einstein, Steve Jobs, and Anne Lamott have spoken to: People who can adjust their natural default setting this way are often described as being ‘well-adjusted’, which I suggest to you is not an accidental term. It’s a matter of my choosing to do the work of somehow altering or getting free of my natural, hard-wired default setting which is to be deeply and literally self-centered and to see and interpret everything through this lens of self. Please don’t worry that I’m getting ready to lecture you about compassion or other-directedness or all the so-called virtues. Other people’s thoughts and feelings have to be communicated to you somehow, but your own are so immediate, urgent, real. The world as you experience it is there in front of YOU or behind YOU, to the left or right of YOU, on YOUR TV or YOUR monitor. Think about it: there is no experience you have had that you are not the absolute centre of. It is our default setting, hard-wired into our boards at birth. But it’s pretty much the same for all of us. We rarely think about this sort of natural, basic self-centredness because it’s so socially repulsive. Here is just one example of the total wrongness of something I tend to be automatically sure of: everything in my own immediate experience supports my deep belief that I am the absolute centre of the universe the realest, most vivid and important person in existence. On solipsism and compassion, and the choice to see the other: You can hear the original delivery in two parts below, along with the the most poignant passages. The speech, which includes a remark about suicide by firearms that came to be extensively discussed after Wallace’s own eventual suicide, was published as a slim book titled This Is Water: Some Thoughts, Delivered on a Significant Occasion, about Living a Compassionate Life ( public library). Just three years earlier, he stepped onto the podium at Kenyon College and delivered one of the most timeless graduation speeches of all time - the only public talk he ever gave on his views of life. “We want to try to set the record straight. On September 12, 2008, David Foster Wallace (February 21, 1962–September 12, 2008) was slain by depression, taking his own life and becoming a kind of patron-saint of the “tortured genius” myth of creativity. “Authors are not always kind to their enemies in texts,” he says. Aja hopes ancient DNA and radiocarbon analyses, currently underway, will resolve the biggest mysteries of the Philistines: Where did they come from and where did they go? Were they wiped out by their enemies or merely absorbed by them? At press time, the team planned to present preliminary results in November. The modest grave goods include tiny jugs, bracelets and weapons.ĭigging at Ashkelon ended in summer, but research continues in the laboratory. Some individuals were resting alone on their backs or sides others were jumbled in groups or cremated. Since then, the Ashkelon team has been exhuming and analyzing the skeletons of Philistine men and women, from infancy to old age. Aja probed the grounds with a backhoe until he struck bone, locating the long-lost burial grounds. Master and Aja were tipped off about the cemetery in 2013, when a retired Israeli surveyor insisted he’d found human bones and pottery just outside Ashkelon’s gates during a construction project decades ago. allows us to proceed for the first time from a really solid foundation,” says Daniel Master, Ashkelon co-director and Wheaton College archaeologist. In July, researchers announced that they had found over 210 skeletons from the first Philistine cemetery ever discovered, just outside the walls of Tel Ashkelon. “Archaeologists have done an excellent job constructing a plausible picture of who these Iron Age people were just based on the scraps we’ve had available to us,” Aja says.īut to confirm the origins and fates of Philistines, archaeologists needed more than scraps they needed Philistine bones. Your curl pattern is also identified by the shape that the strands of hair make, whether they kink, curve, or wind around themselves into spirals." "The flatter or more oval-shaped the follicle, the curlier your hair the more circular the cross-section, the straighter your hair. "Your curl type is determined by the shape of the follicle that your hair grows out of from your scalp," says hairstylist Vernon François. Whether you've got soft bends cascading down your back or tight coils blossoming towards the heavens, there's an easy way to identify exactly what's going on up top. Luckily, we tapped two industry pros who are experts in working with texture to break down some of the finer points of the typing categories. And if anything, you want to at least be able to walk into a store with some idea of what you're looking for to treat your precious crown - and have some baseline knowledge of the best way to style your hair. Power to the people.Ĭontroversy aside, many people have found that even if it isn't perfect, this particular set of guidelines can be super useful in at least helping you identify your curl pattern (or patterns) so you know where to start when you're shopping for hair-care products. It's even gone through a bit of a modification over the years, thanks to folks in the curly community. We're not going to lie: There's been some debate as to whether the typing system is divisive or even too narrow. As it stands now, most folks reference a particular hair typing system for curls, one originally dreamed up by hairstylist Andre Walker. The road to understanding and embracing your texture may be a windy one (because, curls) but it also does not have to be overly complicated. Which you can totally do!īut, if that's not quite your jam, don't fret. When the strands at your crown are looser than the ones on the sides, and even more different than the hair in the back, it's easy to just throw up your hands in frustration and contemplate shaving it all off. Several different textures can exist on one head of curly hair, which all have to somehow look cohesive when you style it. Decoding your curl type can be confusing. "This helps hair retain hydration for healthier curls," she explains. We feel you. Nelms also recommends sleeping on a silk pillowcase or wearing a hair bonnet for further protection. When applying hair oils, detangle and separate your hair with your fingers to ensure the products are evenly distributed. Plus, it can be used as a hot oil treatment. Try GH Beauty Award winner Head & Shoulders Royal Oils Deep Moisture Masque, which scored high in GH Beauty Lab testing for reducing scalp and hair dryness in tests on women with textured strands, and follow with coconut, castor or almond oil, such as lightweight Mielle Organic Mint Almond Oil that locks in moisture on strands and has a slight tingling sensation when applied to the scalp. Nourish your hair with deep conditioners and hot oil treatments at least once per week. This hair type is the most prone to breakage, so constant moisturization is crucial. Type 4C tightly coiled strands are more fragile than any other pattern and have a very tight zig-zag shape that is sometimes indiscernible to the eye. "The more curved the hair follicle, the more compacted the cysteine, the more bonds form, and the curlier the hair," Wilkerson notes, emphasizing that both follicle and hair fiber work in tandem when it comes to creating a curl. In wavy and curly hair, they are closer and can easily bond among themselves, creating more tension in the hair fiber and contributing to curling. In naturally straight hair, the cysteine groups are spread apart so they cannot interact. "Hair is primarily made of cysteine, a sulfur-containing amino acid," Wilkerson says. The chemical bonds in your hair also contribute to your curl pattern. The thickness of hair is also contingent on the follicle size: The thicker the hair strand, the larger the area that it grows from.īut that's not all. Straight hair emerges from a round follicle, while oval and twisted oval follicles create wavy and curly hair. The follicle, just like the hair fiber, can be different shapes and sizes. The letter added the “number of people living with allergic disease is mushrooming”. The tsar could also ensure all acute anaphylaxis cases are treated as a category 1 incident (the most urgent) by NHS ambulance services. It added: “The tsar, as the national lead, will ensure people with allergies receive proper support and joined-up health care to prevent avoidable deaths and ill health.” The letter to Mr Barclay said the tsar would act as an advocate to increase the number of specialist allergy clinics and “to better align primary care and hospital allergy services so that patients have a coherent NHS care pathway”. The coroner stated: ‘There is a risk that future deaths will occur unless action is taken’.” The coroner highlighted the fact that ‘there is no person with named accountability for allergy services and allergy provision at NHS England or the Department of Health as a whole’. “It was raised at the inquest of my daughter, Shante. This lack of national leadership has been raised time and again by coroners at the inquests of those who died following severe allergic reactions. “There are no clear lines of accountability in relation to overall NHS provision of allergy care, nor for the many other areas where policy change is required. In the letter to Mr Barclay, the two parents said: “As mothers, we have come together for change so that our tragedies never happen again. A coroner ruled she died in part because of human error, with failures meaning that an ambulance took more than 40 minutes to arrive at her home in Wood Green, north London. Shante Turay-Thomas, 18, died following a severe allergic reaction to eating a hazelnut. Following her death, the law was changed to require all food outlets to provide a full ingredients list and allergy labelling on food pre-packaged for direct sale. Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, 15, from Fulham, west London, died in July 2016 following a severe allergic reaction to a Pret a Manger baguette sandwich containing sesame. The women wrote to Mr Barclay saying they were renewing their calls after receiving no response from previous health secretaries. It comes as MPs are set to debate two allergy petitions, including one calling for the tsar, on Monday afternoon in Westminster Hall. Tanya Ednan-Laperouse and Emma Turay have told Steve Barclay that their daughters’ deaths “were entirely preventable” and urged the Government to appoint a leader “to act as a champion for people with allergies”. Two mothers whose daughters died from severe allergic reactions have written to the Health Secretary calling for a national allergy tsar.
